Story

We left England to have more opportunities for our son Brian who was then 7 and to have a better climate. My husband John had been to Australia in the 1920’s and during the depression and travelled all over on a motorbike. He loved Autralia so after WWW2 we came out in 1947 to Sydney. We had suffered the privations of life in the UK during the war and it was good to come to a country where food was plentiful and the people were friendly and there was no class distinction based on accent and education. We were not wealthy people. The chances of a good education were so much greater and my son Brian eventually rose as a Barrister and became a Federal Court Judge.

It was a long voyage of 4 weeks from Southampton to Perth on the “Asturias “through the Suez Canal and we stayed at Swanbourne near Fremantle for 2 weeks and then across the Nullarbor by train to Adelaide for Christmas and then after two weeks to Sydney where we stayed for almost 40 years .

Australia was so beautiful and a wonder to English eyes, the sun, Swanbourne the beach at Cottesloe and smell of gumleaves on the hot sand were all wonderful. I love this great country .
