Story
[Reason for leaving homeland]
Edward returning from 6 years serving with Indian Army in 2nd.World war found post -war conditions in Britain so frustrating he looked to emigrate. Opportunely a relative from Australia came to visit and personally endorsed Edward’s application to come to Australia. Within two months the family, Edward, Queenie his wife and four daughters, Felicity aged l8yrs,Pamela l6yrs,Wendy 9yrs. and Lindsay 3 yrs.boarded HMS”Asturias” for Sydney arriving in March 1952.
[About the Journey]
The voyage took us through the Suez Canal…after calling into the Canary Islands, then Malta when a large contingent of Maltese men boarded. They were housed on their own deck…their sleeping was in hummocks. The leg of the journey from Columbo to Perth was the longest and the most tedious for landlubbers. Freemantle was welcomed…and we were enthralled walking around the shops….the green grocers amazed us with the display and array of fresh fruit and vegetables.
[Impressions on Arrival]The family blossomed in Australia. Edward started his own business in Office Stationery. Edward died of heart failure in l967; Queenie died aged 94. leaving 4 children, l6 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren in 2007. A great legacy for successful emigration.
