Story
Edith Livingstone (nŽe Lane)
Edith Livingstone (nŽe Lane) was just 8 years old when she left England for Australia with her parents and 2 siblings. It was such an adventure in 1911. The family immigrated for health reasons and it was hoped the Australian climate would help in this regard. They started life in Glebe and later moved to Gladesville to run a newsagency. Edith attended school in Gladesville and when necessary helped in the family business. The family\’s mode of transport was horse and sulky and she often spoke lovingly of the horse her family used.
Edith met Stanley William Livingstone through a love of ballroom dancing and they married in September 1930. There were two children from the marriage, Bruce and Jeanette, and a happy life was had by all. For most of her married life Edith lived in a little place called Henley (part of Hunters Hill). Life in Henley was simple but full of fun for everyone with most young people playing tennis, swimming in the local tidal pool, cycling, learning ballroom dancing, flying kites, catching tadpoles in the Gladesville Reserve and picnics.
Sadly Stanley passed away in 1966 and a few difficult years ensued. After much deliberation Edith decided to move to Canberra to be with her family including much loved grandchildren. This move took place in April 1974. For the next 20 years she lived in Aranda and during that time participated in family outings, lawn bowls and Scottish activities. She had always loved gardening and her love for her garden continued until her passing in August 1994 at the age of almost 91 years.
