Story
All in all, four of the six children of Jaketh and Jane (Trezise) Grenfell migrated to Australia; John (b.1805), Thomasin (b.1808), Jaketh (b.1813) and Henry Trezise (b. 1820)
John Grenfell was born on 28 July 1805 at St Just, Cornwall, son of Jakeh Grenfell (1779-1850) and Jane Trezise (1778-c1856)
John married Margaret Williams at St Just in Penwith, and migrated to Australia. They had at least two sons, John born c1837 and Thomas Born c1846 both born in St Just, Cornwall.
He died in Victoria in 1874 aged 69 years
His brother Jaketh Grenfell was born on 2 May 1813 in St Just. His first marriage was to Mary Trezise who was born in 1811 in Cornwall and they had seven children; William (b.24Feb1838 who migrated to Australia with his father in 1850 and died on 31 Aug 1896 at Creswick Vic.), John Reynolds (b. 2 Nov1839 who also came to Australia with his father and died on 26 Sept at Orange NSW) , James (B.c1840 who became a scholar and stayed behind in Cornwall), Jane Trezise (born 25 Feb 1843 in St Just and came to Australia also, dying on 23 Oct 1910 at Creswick, Victoria), Mary Ann (born on 25 May 1845, came to Australia with the family and died in Ballarat, Victoria on 6 Mar 1916; son Jaketh died as an infant in Cornwall in Dec.1849.
Unfortunately Mary died on 28 Mar 1850 in St Just aged only 39.
Jaketh married Hannah Ellis, daughter of Charles and Mary Ellis in the same year, and when their first child Elizabeth was a year and a half old, they migrated to Australia, apparently leaving William Henry and James in England. William Henry must have joined them later. The family arrived in Sydney on board the ‘Kate’ on 23 Dec 1856. Young Jaketh, aged about 10 had perished during the voyage.
Jaketh died on 24 Jun 1861 at Redstreak in Victoria aged only 48, and Hannah died much later at Creswick in 1887.
John Reynolds was 17 years old when they arrived in Australia and married another migrant, Elizabeth Jane Lena, born Lena Lindschied, in Germany on 8 Jun.1842, and who had migrated with parents and siblings. They had arrived on 13 Mar.1849 on board the ‘Parland’ which arrived in Sydney on 5 July 1849. Her mother Lena Elizabeth died at Carcoar in 1867 and father Peter died in 1862.
Lena married John Reynolds at Orange 13 Feb1868. They had had 4 children Elizabeth, Mary Ann, John and Peter who were only 8, 7, 5 and 2 respectively when she died at Cadia on 2 Dec.1877 of pneumonia and Phthisis. Her family apparently owned a property, Edinburgh near Cargo.
Descendants of the Grenfell family still live in the same district.
