Story
Hi my name is Paul Clyne and I am writing this story on behalf of my parents as I am purchasing a spot on the immigration bridge as a suprise christmas gift for them both.
It is really quite an eye opener to actually realise how little I really do know as to what was the key reasons for a pair of newly wed 20 year olds with a 9 month old son to pack up and leave the security and support of family and life long friendships that come with being born and bred in a small Scottish fishing village to travel to a place half way around the world. Was it the subsidized air fares, the adventure, the desire to create a better life for themselves and me, an escape from the harsh Scottish climate or a need to break from the norm and run their own race, by their rules? I suspect that it was a little of each.
It was early November in Scotland when we departed and the bad weather had certainly set in for the winter. It is rather ironic that I should be just taking my first steps on that plane journey as all three of us were taking our first steps in different ways. The flight was a long grind with stops in Singapore and then Darwin, arriving at 3am it was in the mid to high 30’s with 99% humidity a pair of wide eyed 20 year olds in woollen polar neck jumpers stepped of the plane to see where they would to calling home, you can only imagine what must have flashed through their minds in that first 30 seconds.
Luckily for us all Darwin was only a refuelling stop then it was then onto Melbourne where they would be setting up home. I am sure that neither of them would have dreamed in a million years that they would still be here some 38 years later living the life that they have. I am very proud of my parents’ achievments and am so happy that they chose Australia to be our new home.
