Story
We married in 1970 and left after the birth of Clint, Lisa and Justin to seek a less racist abode on the planet. Apartheid was a heinous practice written into the law of our birthland. My family was of mixed German ancestry, my husband’s of mixed Scottish background. Australia was casting out the “keep Australia white” policy and seemed the most democratic of the choice countries for immigration on the planet. Most of my husband’s family likewise settled here. He and two sisters were doctors and the country also gained.
About the Journey – “Boeing-people” we called ourselves..and chided Australians born here as being “boat-people” with tongue in cheek. The flight took 22 hrs.
Impressions on Arrival – Hot, temperature 40 degrees upon arrival. Very happy until some racist problems in Sydney. Settled in Orange NSW, where our story in a book “Faces of Orange” could be veiwed by those interested. Also my husband’s books, “Goodbye South Africa, Hello Australia and Goodnight Australia” available in manuscript or book form will be available to progeny.
