Story

Benjamin O’Connor migrated from Ireland via England on the 29 March 1892 from London, bound for Brisbane, Queensland aboard the steamship “Jelunga”. The ship had a registered tonnage of 3371. She carried 276 passengers. Ben was 22 at the time and his occupation was shown as “farm labourer”, a single man.

After arriving at Brisbane, (being sponsored by his cousin) Ben worked as a farm labourer at Gatton Qld, and saved enough money to buy land at Bundaberg. Here he met and married Mary Foley, who was also from Ireland, having immigrated as a 16 year old, the year before Ben.

After the birth of their fourth child in Bundaberg, the family moved back to the Brisbane Valley, where another 3 children were born.
