Story

My parents, older brother and sister left Hungary because of the invasion and occupation by the Russians. My father had some involvement in the protests against this invasion and therefore we had to leave our homeland of Hungary. Unfortunately both my parents are now deceased and we do not know the full story as they did not talk about the horrors of the war or the invasion suffice to say those were very hard and dangerous times.

It is my belief that Canada had accepted a number of Refugees and the Nelly was headed for Canada, however there was some incident that directed the ship to change direction to Australia. We where accepted as Refugees by the Australian Government and the Nelly arrived on the 24 Feb 1952 in Port Melbourne.

My father said to us this is our new country now. Both my parents worked very hard all their lives and contributed much by this hard work to the development of Australia. We were naturalised in 1954 when Queen Elizabeth II visited Sale Victoria.
