Story

Auguste Simeon was the youngest of eight children born into a farming family in Hammersville, Loraine, France. He was schooled until the age of 14. He went into the service of the Viscount Boureparte in Champly. He went on to Paris and learnt the shop trade. He left Paris after witnessing the beginnings of revolution in Paris in 1848,

He sailed to California on “The Cerese” and the journey from Le Harve took 7 months. He went with ohter Frenchmen to Mariposa.He heard of the gold discoveries in New South Wales and set out for Sydney on the “General Vargey”. Auguste arrived in Sydney in July 1853.

Straight onto a ship for Melbourne, then he humped his swag to Bendigo where he soon struck payable gold. After 2 years he returned to Melbourne and banked 300 pounds in gold .He returned to Bendigo, then to Eaglehawk Gully, which he also described as very good. He was part of the rushes in Port Curtis,Qld, Gippsland Vic., Forbes, Parkes and Cargo, NSW.While living in a tent on the banks of the Lachlan River in Forbes he married Frances Skehan, a native of Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland. Their son, John Peter was born in the tent in 1864. He was my great grandfather. Auguste and Fanny settled finally at Cargo and spent their last years in Cowra where their son settled and had his family.
