Story
Arthur Clapp was born in Cornwall England in 1801. He was sent out to Australia for Cockfighting is what has been handed down the line. True or not nobody can verify for sure. What I do have is he came out on the Gilmore in March 20-1829. Left London arriving at Fremantle on 15 December 1829. The ship carried 182 passengers and a host of live stock and other general cargo. No convicts were sent to Western Australia until 1850.
Arthur Clapp, also spelt Clap, is listed on the passenger list as a labourer. However the 1832 census lists Clapp as a 28 year old from Cornwall. He was one of Captain R.G.Mear’s servants, Mears himself having arrived aboard the Gilmore as one of the major Agricultralists under Peel’s scheme. Western Australian Library has records that a person named Arthur Clapp, who had a daughter Mary, came out to Western Australia in 1829.
Clapp was comitted for larceny some time in 1829 or 1830 and was imprisoned aboard the Marquis of Anglesea. He was discharged on 2 July 1830. Clapp remained in the colony and in the 1837 census is listed as an agricultral labourer working for William Shaw. In March 1843 Clapp married Jane Crampton (born1824). He left for South Australia aboard the Arpenteur in March 1849. His wife and three children followed him on 18 September 1850 aboard the Daphne.
