Reason for leaving homeland
Worked for The Bank of Adelaide, in London. Had just finished 2 years National Service. Felt Country was in a turmoil, no one seemed to want to work and I saw little future. My mother had just become engaged ( My father having died some years earlier) The Bank encouraged me to migrate and paid my salary whilst on way to Australia.
About the Journey
I came on the SS Oronsay. It was a wonderful experience, poor accommodation and facilities, but met great people and saw some wonderful parts of the world.
Arrived in Port Adelaide and had all my possessions stolen from the truck delivering them to my accommodation on day one. Lost all my family history and possessions . Adelaide was a bit of shock on arrival, dry and pretty uninteresting port area, especially after Perth. Soon setttled into way of life and met my future wife in first week of arrival . She was a pediatric physiotherapist , specialising in tutoring and the handling of handicapped children in the Childrens Hospital .
Worked for Bank of Adelaide, in South Australia and Melbourne. Later left Bank and progressed through various companies ending back in Adelaide in my own retail businesses. Had 3 retail shops, which allowed me to educate 4 children through private education system. Was later approached by Myer Adelaide to join them and became a senior executive and leader of one of their major overseas buying groups, for the whole of Myer Australia. Travelled world for nearly 10 years with them.
Later approached by local Adelaide retailer John Martin & Company Limited , in senior management role and later became Buying Director, now under the hands of Adelaide Steamship Company and the John Spalvins stable of Companies. Worked for them for over 10 years. Retired from them just prior to David Jones taking over the John Martins various sites in 1993/4
Spending retirement in various service organisations including Rotary (receiving two of their highest awards) Meals on Wheels , and helping a major medical project of volunteer doctors working in West Timor. Have recently held managment consulting role, and led the growth of major retail chain in Adelaide, in the variety discount business.
Have 4 children and 6 grandchildren (of which 4 are males). I was the last male of my family, which current research has been traced back to 1694, originating from Scotland.
