Story
Alice Kate Lucy was born Alice Kate Wright in Argentina in 1872. Her early life was very adventuresome – travelling with her parents to Africa and Australia. Both countries provided precarious adventures for the young girl and her family.
Alice took her religion seriously and in her teens became one of the Salvation Army’s young soldiers, proclaiming her faith by being prepared to travel to any corner of this largely unknown country. One of her first appointments was to Kew in Victoria. A gentle town both because of its inhabitants and of its mild weather. From there she was transferred to Cue in Western Australia…this must have been quite a culture shock…a hot dry area peopled mainly with gold diggers, and little law and order. However she must have coped…one of the very few photos shows her seated on a camel in full Salvation Army uniform. She was still evidently carrying on the good work.
Transferring to more populated towns further south, Alice met and married James Richard Lucy in 1901 who also was prepared to follow this newly formed type of worship and at the time of marrying was a Sergeant in the Salvation Army.
James had been a marine with the British Navy but by now had settled in Wetern Australia being employed by the State Railways.
Kate and James had several children, three of whom lived to carry on the Lucy name.
