Story

Parents Ewen ( Hugh ) Ross and Ann Nicholson left Concordan Skye Scotland as part of the ” Clearances” on a Highland and Island Emigration Society ( HIES) assisted passage – they left with their 8 children on the ship Arabian on 3/6/1854 and arrived in Portland Victoria 19/9/1854. Ewen was accidently killed when run over by a dray 15/5/1869.

Alexander was a farmer in Victoria for 37 years and spent next 30 years in NSW. He had 4 sons and 8 daughters.

One son Donald, enlisted Australian Imperial Army Force joining 15th 4th AIF 19/10/1915. Joined 56th Battallion 20/4/16 arriving Marseilles 27/6/1916. He was killed in action in the trenches France 20/7/1916.

Another son, Charles Alexander Ross also served in France enlisting with Donald. On his return to Australia, he married his brother’s girlfriend Nellie.
