Story
Alberto Marin was born in Cavaso, Italy on the 17th june 1903.
As a youngster, he served 5 years in the Carabiniere in Belluno. At the age of 22 he decided to migrate to Australia.
He arrived in Melbourne on the “SS Palermo” on the 3rd February 1926. He then spent some time in Griffith and Lithgow before settling in the Richmond River district of NSW where he worked in the canefields and grew vegetables.
He married Oliva Baldo by proxy on the 14th October 1933 while she was residing in Italy. After her arrival in Australia the next year, they set up home at Fernside, just outside Lismore.
Albert learnt to read and write English fluently, so much so that he was often called upon to interpret for other migrants.
In 1943 Alberto moved his wife and two daughters, Elmie and Ada, to Rosebank, a banana growing valley north of Lismore. Their son, John, arrived the following year.
In 1960, whilst still at Rosebank, Alberto suffered a severe stroke. As a result, he left Lismore and moved to Yenda to be close to his daughter, Elmie and her family.
Alberto died in Griffith on the 9th August 1966 aged 63 years.
