Story

My father, a New Zealander, joined the RAAF as a pilot and met my mother on a train in the UK. Dad returned to Australia in 1946 and mum and I followed him soon after on the Stirling Castle.

My only memories are seeing flying fish and having the England cricket team on board.

We disembarked in Melbourne where dad met us and we flew to Sydney. It must have been very hard for mum leaving her family behind and with little hope of seeing her dad again. Mum never did see him again, but did visit her sisters many times later in life. We lived the first year or so in flat 2 number 23 Balfour Rd Rose Bay with dad’s mum and two sisters. We then moved upstairs to flat 6 where we lived until I was 13 and moved to Hobart in 1958. I remember life in the flats as very pleasant with very friendly people.
