Story
Reason for leaving homeland – defected from communist Yugoslavia because of discrimination against Hungarian minorities. First time jailed for trying to escape across Slovenia / Austria border. Second time successfully made it to Germany where Piroska and Rudolf were married. After 2 yrs emigrated to Australia.
About the Journey – Departed from Hamburg. After 36 days by ship and pregnant with first child, arrived in Geelong.
Impressions on Arrival – After growing up during the war, and the post-war purges and communist oppression, constant hunger and poverty, Australia was like Heaven. The freedom and opportunities allowed Piroska and Rudi to prosper and raise 5 children.
