Story

Reason for leaving homeland – Married in 1967 and life was an adventure. Several countries wanted immigrants at that time, so we literally flipped a coin and it came up Australia!!

About the Journey – Sailed on the ‘Flavia’ (An Italian line), through the Panama Canal to Sydney. Journey took six weeks. Journey was a nightmare. My newly wed husband and I were in 8 bed cabins with two decks between us. Many of the evening dinners (spaghetti) were flavoured with the sounds of arguments coming from the kitchens, with the chef chasing another around the dining room one evening!!

Impressions on Arrival – Sydney looked beautiful, and we couldn’t wait to start our new life here. Within the week we both had employment, and were purchasing our first home within three months. I am now a naturalised Australian
