The Australian Story of James Chung Gon (Part Two)
As Chinese Elder, James Chung Gon was involved in business and civic affairs. He was one of the prime organisers of the Chinese Dragon Procession to raise funds for the initial development of the now famous Cataract George Tourist Grounds.
He was also responsible for raising money from the Chinese Community a substantial donation towards the cost of the Launceston General Hospital Operating Theatre.
He was largely responsible for the transfer of the contents of the Chinese Joss House (a temple of worship) from the Weldborough tin mining district to the Launceston Museum Collection.
During his life living in Launceston Tasmania James Chung Gon\’s name became synonymous with honesty, fair dealing and general benevolence. Many over his lifetime had cause to thank him for a helping hand.
On 23/2/1952, James Chung Gon died in Launceston, at age 97 years.
Your writer then aged nine years was proud to take part in the Launceston Civic Funeral Procession in honour of his passing. The long procession through main Launceston Streets was lead by the Lord Mayor, dignitaries, family, innumerable friends and acquaintances to the memorial service at the Baptist Church at which he had worshipped.
Descendants of James Chung Gon are successfully represented in many professions and professional occupations. They live in cities and countries around the globe, including most states of Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Germany and USA.
With the future advent of modern technology, James Chung Gon would have been incredulous if he had been told that his life story in the twenty first century would be recorded and celebrated via a yet to be invented technology called the internet!
