Story
George SMITH was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, in 1777. On 10 August, 1805, at Warwick Assizes, England, he was sentenced to 7 years transportation. He left England on 28 January, 1806, aboard the “Fortune”, mastered by Henry MOORE, and arrived in Australia on 12 July, 1806. Four convicts died on the voyage, leaving 253 males and 48 females to disembark. This was the first voyage of the “Fortune” to the Colony and it was to return with other convicts on a later voyage.
Although a convict, he was actually a clerk to the Bench of Magistrates at Windsor at the time he married Elizabeth ROBINSON by special licence at the Hawksbury Chapel on 19 October, 1813. She was the daughter of convicts Edward ROBINSON and Mary HARRISON.
George SMITH died on 10 December, 1826, and was buried at St.Mathews, Windsor. There is a large crypt at the cemetery containing George, Elizabeth and some children. At the time of his death his occupation was described as a “victualler”, this being a person who supplies food and stores.
His children were;
1. Mary Ann SMITH, born 17/2/1815, at Windsor. She married James CUNNINGHAM and had 2 sons, James b.1837 and George b.1839. Mary died on 2/9/1841.
2. Eliza SMITH, born 19/8/1816 at Windsor. She d., on 12/3/1819 , and was buried at St.Matthews, Windsor.
3. Henry Alexander SMITH born in 1818, at Windsor, and died in 1874. Married Sarah Rebecca MURRAY.
4. Harriet SMITH, born 1820, at Windsor, and died in 1899. Married Thomas SARJEANT.
5. Maria SMITH, born 9/5/1822, at Windsor. In 1850 she married her brother-in-law James CUNNINGHAM after his wife, Mary Ann SMITH (No. 1 above) had died.
6. Eliza SMITH, born 7/2/1824, at Windsor. In 1852 she married George SMITH-HALL Jnr. There were no children, however, they apparently adopted her sister Maria’s daughter.
7. George Edward SMITH, born 28/4/1826, at Windsor. He died 10 months later on 18/2/1827, and buried at St.Matthews with his parents.
