Story

Ante and his wife Marija decided to join the senior Zaknich family in Broken Hill. Ante initially came alone, sailing on Sorrento, an Italian ship that arrived in Melbourne on 5th February 1956. He flew to Broken Hill where he was greeted by his mother and friends from Blato, who were already living in Broken Hill. He met his father for the first time in thirty two years.

Ante worked about six and a half years for building contractors around town then he worked for the Broken Hill City Council for about three and a half years. He was then ready to start a business of his own which continued for twenty one years until his retirement.

Anton and Marija sacrificed a lot for their children. They were sad to leave Croatia but it wasn\’t possible to live there. They chose to bring them to Broken Hill for a better life. They have their life on track and it is a lot better now.
