Story
Richard Matchett
Richard Matchett was born on the 12-3-1806 in Derryanville, Armagh, Ireland, the seventh son in a large family of nine sons and two daughters; the children of William Matchett and Mary Robinson.
William Matchett was a farmer. The old Matchett home was still standing in 2009.
Richard Matchett married his cousin
1. Mary Matchett; in 1827- D 1847
2. Anne Lester, widow
3. Phebe Redman
Times were difficult in Ireland, food was scarce, many migrated to America and Australia. Among them the children of Richard and Mary. Their son Richard, daughters Dinah, Jane Ann, Elizabeth and Mary.
Also nephews and nieces, children of Richard\’s brothers John, William; George Matchett, his wife Elizabeth Todd and children Sophia and John, George, a brother of Richard.
Richard Matchett arrived in Australia in August 1856 on the ‘Red Jacket’. As his daughters were in the Gisborne district we assume that Richard met Phoebe Redman (Redmond). We do not know, but Phoebe travelled to Australia on the ‘Ocean Monarch’ with Richard\’s daughters. She was to become his wife number 3.
Richard and Phoebe had five children, three girls and two boys. Richard at this time was working in the Malmbury district.
Richard died the same day as his youngest daughter; the child\’s death preceeds Richards in the register. Both died on 21 May 1867 in New haven (Woodend). The death certificate says he was 60 yrs old, cause of death was ‘Disease of the heart 4 days’.
He lived in Australia 10 years, 9 months.
