Story
Thomas Smallacombe left his homeland with his wife and 4 small children to make a better life for himself in Australia. They came out on the ship “Brightman” which according to Lloyd’s Shipping Records was a British ship-rigged vessel, built of teak at Calcutta in 1826, weighing 384 tons.
The ship departed from Plymouth, England on 28th August 1840 and arrived in Pt. Adelaide on 13th Dec 1840 with Thomas, his wife Mary, along with sons Philip, William and daughter Mary Jane. A daughter Mary Anne died on the voyage out to Australia. They were registered as being assisted passengers and Thomas’s occupation was listed as agricultural labourer.
On arrival they settled in the District of Kensington according to the 1841 Census. Records of the District Council of Onkaparinga commencing 1855 reveal that Thomas was farming Lot 5240 for the South Australian Land Company and that he owned a total of 373 acres of his own and paid 10pounds 5shillings and 6pence in rates on 27Oct 1857.
Thomas and Mary had another 4 sons born at Woodside, SA. and these sons all eventually took up land in other parts of South Australia. Thomas died on 25 July 1882 and is buried at Wooodside. His wife, Mary is buried in Georgetown SA along with six of her children.
