Story

I believe the reason that my family left Egypt like a lot of others was when President Nassar came to power he wanted Europeans out of Egypt and since we were French/Maltese background that meant us. Until that time my parents had a wonderful life with lots of family and friends but times had changed.

We left Egypt on the ship Mooltan 1949 as I was only 18 months old. I don’t remember the journey but I believe my parents enjoyed it very much, mixing with others who were heading for a new country.

When we first arrived we lived with my mothers Aunty at Mascot for a while my mother said at first she use to cry because it was very different from her life back home. The food was not what they were used to – no deli’s, – but in tme we all settled in. My dad went to work 4 days after arriving- there was no dole back then.

We soon moved to Darlinghurst were I grow up mixing mostly with Australians. My mother got a job as well to help the family. My parents passed away in 1988/1989 and even though I have lived overseas I think Australia is the best place we have it all. I thank God my parents came to Australia and maybe I should thank President Nassar as well.
