Story

Henry Matthews was born in Zeal Monachorum, Devon, to William and Honor. The family were mainly agricultural labourers and very poor. Henry married Mary Ann Dart from the neighbouring town of Coldridge 25th May 1874. Mary Ann was the daughter of John Dart, a blacksmith and wife Mary Ann.

They arrived in Australia in April 1885 on the ship “Merkara” disembarking at Brisbane. Henry was listed as a remittance passenger.

In 1883 – 86 Henry was listed as a Fruiterer, of Waterworks Road, Brisbane. 1892 -95 he was a storekeeper at Stanley st. Brisbane, and 1892-3 a Fruiterer, still at Stanley St.

Henry and Mary Ann had 3 children . William Henry John, Charles, and Rose Maud Mary Ann.

By 1901 Mary Ann Matthews (nee Dart) had re-married in Sydney to Joseph Brain.

Henry died 10th Sep. 1918 and is buried in South Brisbane Cemetery, Queensland.

Mary Ann Brain died 22nd Oct. 1909, and is buried at Rookwood Cemetery.
