Story
Elizabeth Eliza Mumby was transported from London, England in 1848 aboard the “Tory”. She was tried and convicted in Boston, England on the 18th. October 1847. Sentenced to 7 years Transportation. She arrived in then Van Diemens Land on 6/8/1848. Eliza had at least two children in England, but evidently did not take them with her on the voyage as her convict sheet shows two, but not as being on board.
The 1841 Census of England show 2 children at the same premises as Eliza, Charlotte 3 years old, and Eliza 1 year old
In the Boston Petty Sessions of 10 December 1847, an order was made upon Wm. Kennerby, of Old Bolingbroke, servant, for payment of 2s.a week and costs towards maintenance of a bastard child belonging to Eliza Mumby, now a convict confined in the gaol at Boston.
Eliza was convicted of stealing wine, beef, bread and butter and other goods. She had also been convicted in 1843 of similar offences and her mother Mary Mumby was charged with receiving stolen goods and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment with hard labour.
Eliza’s occupation was shown as a professed cook, so she probably stole from her place of employment.
The “Tory” departed from London on 30/4/1848, on her third voyage, a barque, 512 tons, built at Sunderland in 1842. Her Master was Smith and the Surgeon Chas. Smith. The voyage took 98 days. 170 female convicts landed at Hobart.
Eliza married convict Isaac Salter who was transported from England in 1837. They met in Hobart and Eliza had 9 more children born in Tasmania.
Inserted by great, great grandson Lance Dwyer.
