Story
Isaac Salter was transported from England for desertion. He was Court Martialled at Wellington Barracks, London on the 8th. March 1836. Isaac left England aboard the “Lady Nugent” on the 12th. November 1836. He served 8 years as a convict in Tasmania.
Isaac received his Free Certificate on the 28/1/1844.
On the 21/5/1850 Isaac was granted Permission to Marry, and he duly married Eliza Mumby (also a convict) on the 10/6/1850. Eliza would have been heavily pregnant at this time as a baby was born on the 29/8/1850. Isaac and Eliza had a further 8 children in Tasmania. Their youngest, named Charles Frederick Salter was my great grandfather, born in 1864.
Isaac’s working life in Tasmania started as a Police Constable in 1850, while living at Collins Street Hobart. Then as a Sergeant of Police in 1851, while living at Davey Street Hobart, becoming District Constable for the Fingal District in 1853. In 1854 his occupation is shown as overseer at Avoca. From 1856 to 1858 he is shown as a farmer, while living at Georges Bay (St.Helens). Then from 1861 to 1864 Isaac’s occupation is shown as a labourer at Falmouth, Tasmania.
A daughter of Isaac and Eliza’s (Mary) married Blassein (Bloss) Singline a well known family name on the East Coast of Tasmania. Mary had 12 children.
