Story
Charles CURTHOYS was born in 1820 in Olvestone, Glouchester, England. His parents were Mathew & Eunice CURTHOYS (nee TACHORNEY).
Charles arrived in Australia in 1853 on board the sailing ship ‘Indian Queen’
Charles first wife, Mary Ann Curthoys , died 12th March 1860. They had three deceased children and four children living at that time, Mathew born 1845, Mark born 1847, John born 1853 & Charles born 1856. Mary & her children arrived in Australia on board ‘Tudor’ in June 1857.
After Mary Ann’s death Charles remarried to Sarah MEEKLEY on 19th December 1860 at St Stephens Church of England & Ireland, Richmond, Melbourne. Sarah was born in London England and her parents were John James & Elizabeth MEEKLEY (nee JOHNSON).
Charles & Sarah had William Meekley CURTHOYS born 14th February 1862 at Fitzroy, Elizabeth CURTHOYS born 1863 at Fitzroy and Stephen CURTHOYS born 1865 in Melbourne.
Charles various occupations recorded on various certificates were Carter, Hawker, Drayman.
They were living in Fitzroy at the time of their marriage & their childrens births.
Charles CURTHOYS died 14 July 1877 in Melbourne Hospital, aged 60 years from meningitis.
Sarah CURTHOYS nee MEEKLEY died 13 Jan 1879 in Melbourne Hospital, aged 51 years.
Their son William Meekley CURTHOYS married 22 Apr 1882 Annie O’SHANNESSY who was born on 16th November 1865 in Melbourne to Austin & Jane O’SHANNESSY (nee SMITH). William & Annie CURTHOYS left Melbourne for unknown reasons after the birth of their 4th child in 1890/91 and moved to what is known as Ingham Siding near Knowsley/Axedale, Victoria. This was near the quarries. The Ingham Quarries had a stone saw & William helped the quarry cut bluestone. Some of these were used on the bluestone landing at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo.
William & Annie had 12 children Elsie Elizabeth born 1885, William Joseph born 1887, Austin Edward born1889, Mary Jane born 1890, Annie born 1891, Charles Albert born 1894, Stephen John born 1896, Ernest Stanislaus born 1898, Archibald George born 1899, Harold James born 1901, Eileen Doris born 1903 & Matilda Agnes born 1904. The 1st 4 children were born in Melbourne, the next 5 children were born in Axedale/Heathcote area & the last 3 children were born at Hotham.
Annie died on 24th July 1913 aged 48 years at Aveston, McIvor, Victoria.
When William had finished at Ingham, his sons were getting bigger, so they started cutting wood for Buckle & Jeffrey based in Bendigo. William jnr moved to Lalbert, Victoria and started supplying mallee roots for Buckle & Jeffrey.
William snr moved up there to be with them and died at Boort on 29th Dec 1945 aged 83 years.
