Story
Very little is known about Bridgetta or Bridget. On most of her childrens’ birth certificates, her father’s name is recorded as James Mc Mahon, occupation cabinet maker. There is no information about her mother. Some of the certificates state she was born in Ireland and others, born Sydney and a mention of Kissing Point. In my research I found a Bartholomew McMahon and his wife brought out from Ireland an extra child who was not on the original application. Bartholomew’s father is also James McMahon, so he could be Bridgets sister. Her birth was probably about 1838.
Bridgetta married George Baker at ‘Burrandowan Station’ Qld. in 1855 although no record has been located. The couple moved to ‘Taabinga Station’ where 7 children were born. His occupation being ‘overseer.’
Elizabeth Jane Weldon (wife of Henry Weldon) is recorded as the ‘nurse’ at most of the births.
CHILDREN;-
Matilda Ann Baker born 1857 died 1860 from scald and is buried on ‘Taabinga’ not far from the old homestead.
William Edward Baker born 1859, married Emma Allenden, died 1940
George Richard Baker born 1861, married Annie Maree Weldon, died 1943
Helena Jane Baker born 1863, married Thomas Walsh, died 1924
Mary Ann Baker born 1865 died 1883
Maria Theresa Baker born 1868, married Charles Quigley Weldon, died 1943
Matilda Ann Baker born 1871, married (1) William O’Sullivan, (2) William Manser, died 1957
Sadly Bridgetta died from ‘cold after miscarriage’ 29th May 1872 aged 34 years and is buried beside her 1st daughter Matilda Ann.
On 11/8/1873 George Baker married the nurse, Elizabeth Jane Weldon (nee Perry) who had attended the births of his children. (Elizabeth’s husband Henry was killed when thrown from a horse.) {see story on George Baker, and Henry Weldon}.
