John Daicy and Catherine (nee) Daley, farmers of County Cork.
Known Children, John and Daniel.
1848. The Immigrants.
East Stonehouse – County Devon.
John Daicy, labourer from Cork and Mary Hogan , housekeeper from Tipperary married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church E. Stonehouse on 19/9/1848. Witnesses were John’s brother Daniel and an unknown person, Judith Boyle. At the time John was living at 22 George St. E. Stonehouse and Mary at 12 George St. The accommodation was cheap and was used by immigrants awaiting a ship.
John, 24 years and Mary, 17 years started their 126-day journey to Australia . John could read (had Bible) and write – (the critera was that he could sign his name) and Mary could read only and had Bible.
They sailed from Plymouth on 9th January 1849 and arrived at Point Henry (Geelong) Victoria on the 13th. May 1849. Their ship was the ” Sir George Seymour” of 850 tons with 6 paying passengers of 302 souls , the rest being Master, Surgeon , Officers , Crew and Immigrants. It was a good trip for the times for they lost only one adult male, one adult female, 8 males and 5 females under 14 and 1 male and 4 females under one year old.
The new arrivals John and Mary did not accept the offers of employment by farmers looking for cheap labour but “went to Ashby (now Geelong West) “on their own account”.
The First Australian Born Generation.
John and Mary did not find their dream at Ashby. Their next location was Yan Yan Gurt where John Percy Dacy was born on 27/12/1849.
John Percy was baptised as Dacy at St Mary’s Basilica, Geelong, on 26th April 1850. The parents’ home is listed as Yan Yan Gurt.
The next child was Honora Catherine Deasy, born at Geelong on 28/07/1951 and baptised at St. Mary\’s on 10/08/1851.
Thomas Francis Daicy was born and baptised at Geelong. Thomas used Daicy in all known events of his life.
Mary Jane Amelia Dacy was born on17/04/1856 and was baptised on 08/05/1856 probably at Yan Yan Gurt.
Michael William Daicy was born at Newtown, Geelong on 15/01/1958 and registered at Geelong on 03/05/1858.
Then came Walter Daniel Daicy who was born at Ballaarat (old spelling ) on 05/01/1871 and registered at Ballaarat on 08/03/1872..
The first Australian Born
John Percy married on 23rd June 1881 at St. Francis\’ Church Melbourne to Deborah M. Kean. John Percy lived at Ballarat. He was aged 30 years, occupation draper. Deborah was the sister of Kean of Kean
and Co, Drapers of Melbourne and Ballarat. That J.P. stated that his father John Daicy was a ‘gentleman Farmer’, who no doubt was a gentleman but conducted his carrying business from the corner of Sturt and Drumond Streets Ballarat where he rented a house and stable. Georgie, Deborah\’s sister was witness to the marriage. John Percy Dacy died in Melbourne at Yarra Bend Lunatic Asylum on 24/7/1919. Deborah died 30/11/1936. Her last address was 11 Portland Place, South Yarra, Victoria. They are co-interred with their son, Joseph, at Coburg Cemetery.
