It was in the late fifties on a cold dark winter\’s day in Vienna Austria that my husband
Fred and I went to the Natural History museum for some inspiration. We came across a
replica of a gold nugget from Australia named ‘Welcome Stranger’. We were very
impressed by it.
Afterwards searching for a hot coffee we strolled through the lanes of the inner City of
Vienna and there a poster in a show window caught our attention as it was saying :
‘Welcome to Australia!’ and showing a beautiful sunny beach full with happy and
healthy looking people. Sunshine and gold in Australia! We got really interested.
Eight months later we landed in Melbourne – Essendon Airport carrying one suitcase and
one art folder plus all our savings. Straightaway we rented a comfortable flat in St. Kilda
opposite the beach.
Within a month both of us could start working in our profession as Commercial Artists
and Designers. After a short time I accepted an offer to work as a photographic fashion
model for the Australian Wool Board, as well as for various fashion houses and
magazines including Vogue Australia.
We truly enjoyed our success and bought our first car. Every weekend we took trips to
explore this most inspiring country and it\’s absolute otherness from where we came
from. But most of all we noticed and appreciated deeply the unreserved friendliness and
trust of the Australian people towards us.
We stayed and we have had a most rewarding life here. We certainly found the promised
sunshine but we never found a nugget. But we found lots of gold in form of all the
good, beautiful and happy days in this unique country.
