Story

My father was a lad of 16 years and he decided he was sick of the winters in England. He was the sixth of seven children of a Yorkshire miner and he wanted to make his own way.

He came out to Australia under the Dreadnought Scheme which brought out British young men to work on farms. He was a very shy lad but made two lifetime friends – both from Yorkshire.

He arrived in January and loved the hot weather. He had to work very hard and during the depression he and one of his mates worked across NSW with a horse and sulky.
