Story

William R Muirhead.

At the age of 18 William, who was born in Scotland, joined the London branch of the Bank of Adelaide. Three years later he was transferred to the Bank’s head office in Adelaide, arriving on board the R.M.S. Ormuz on 6th January 1908.

In 1911 he married Ellen McDougall whose parents both migrated from different parts of the world. In 1876 her mother came from Muckle Row in the Shetland Islands and in 1855 her father migrated from Nova Scotia. He arrived in Adelaide, all by himself, on the Bucephalus at the ripe old age of 12.

After serving the Bank in both city and country branches Muirie, as he was called, was appointed Manager at Waikerie followed by Pinnaroo, Kapunda, Streaky Bay and Angaston finally retiring in 1950 as Senior Branch Inspector. Unfortunately he did not live long to enjoy his retirement as he died in 1952 aged 65. His wife Ellen died in 1965 aged 84. They had two children, Margaret Elizabeth (Mrs David Bank) and Robert McDougall, both of whom were living in Adelaide in 2006.
