Story
James Tivendale was baptised 1826 at Largo, Fife, Scotland, parents Thomas Teviotdale (Tevendale on his death) and Helen Peebles. James, a weaver, married Janet Skeil 1826-1900 in 1848 at Largo, emigrating to Australia on the CHILDE HAROLD arriving Geelong Victoria 16/6/1853 with 2 children. During gold rushes men pitched tents in Spring Rd. Malvern near a spring and left their families there while they went to the diggings. James Tivendale was one who did so. He later drove a dray for Gardiner of Gardiners Creek, and lived McArthur St. Malvern 1899. James and Janet had 9 children –
Thomas 1849-1916 grocer High St. Malvern 1899 md. 1874 Susan Anglin 1853-1931 of Cork Ireland, 5 ch. Thomas & Susan lived in Bride St. Malvern named in 1872 by the owner of 2 newly built cottages first tenanted by brides after St.George’s Church weddings. All evil spirits were exorcised from Bride St. by the beating of many tins by the village’s unpopular tin-can band until bribed to go away with bottles of beer.
Son Robert a butcher in High St. E.Malvern 1899, served in the Boer War and later had a dairy in McArthur St.
3 grandsons Max 1903-46, Charlie 1916-80, & Noel 1920-2006 were all involved in radiography:
Max with Walter & Eliza Hall Inst. Medical Research in the 1920s & later with Bethesda Hosp. during WWII;
Charlie worked with Max at Bethesda in 1930s, the Prince Henry’s Hosp. until 1940 when he joined the AIF & was posted to the Middle East then Papua NG;
Noel began studying radiography in 1938 then took over at Prince Henry’s Hosp. from Charlie in 1940, was disappointed he was not allowed to join the RAAF but stayed there until 1948 (marrying co-worker Nurse Dorothy Trenberth in 1945. They had 2 children Peter & Judith.) When Noel worked at the Darwin Hosp. in 1948 bomb damage was still visible. He later worked with Dr. Gutheridge & at Chelmer Labs. until his retirement. A grandchild works in “nuclear medicine” as it is now called.

Lyle, son of Robert & Edith, served in WWI at Bersheba, & once saw Lawrence of Arabia; he also served in WWII & later was Health Officer & Quarantine Officer at Darwin for many years.

Alexander 1870-1918 butcher 24 Wattletree Rd. Armadale 1899 m. Agnes Mann 1872-1951, 6 ch.
Son Victor served WWI.
Son Percy was Secy. of Pastrycook’s Union for many years.
Gr-grandson Gary was Project Manager on many large building sites.
Parents Janet d. 28/2/1900 Malvern aged 74, and James d. 23/11/1909 Northcote, both buried St.Kilda cemetery.
There is a Tivendale Road in Darwin NT & one in Officer Vic.
