Story

As a, Post WW11 soldier, William Nicholson believed a fresh start for himself and his family, (wife, son and daughter) would benefit them all.

The passage to Australia involved a six (6) week journey by ship (S.S.New Australia), via South Africa, due to the Suez Canal being blocked, after the troubles there. It was quite a pleasant trip, stopping at Dacca, (French E.A.), Durban S.A. then on to Fremantle, Melbourne and disembarking at Sydney in late September 1957. Next day, travelling to Canberra, by train.

We were adequately domiciled, temporarily, in the Ainslie Migrant Hostel, until housing was obtained by William, through his employer. From this point, the well being of the whole family improved dramatically. William carrying on to retirement in his job with the electricity authority, son (William) serving his apprenticeship with the same authority, daughter Jean becoming a short hand typist and mother (Ann ) doing what mothers do best and then some. The family expanded through marriage, by four (4) grandchildren and so it continues, adding to the Australian population.

As a family, it was never regretted that William decided, with his wife Ann, to come to Australia.

This year, those of us still around, celebrated 50 Years in this great country.

Best wishes for the project.

WJC Nicholson (Son of William)
