Story
Guerrino sailed from Genoa Italy in June 1912 and disembarked Melb. Aug 1912 as an unassisted immigrant to Victoria. from the German Ship “Gneisenau” (passenger list had incorrectly listed him as BATTERIE, however, ages and first names match).
He travelled to Rutherglen Vict. with his young 19 year old wife Guiditta (nee Croce, born June 16, 1894 Badia,Verona, Italy) where he worked as a miner. Two sons were born here (Tulio 20/9/1912 & Aldo 1/12/1913). They moved to Broken Hill in 1914. Daughter Mary was born here 22/7/1915. They then moved to Griffith in the M.I.A. in 1915 (via Adelaide, Melbourne, Albury, Junee and finally Willbriggie near Griffith) and took up farming. Last son Rino was born here on 17/6/ 1923. Guerrino died from a farming accident in that same year. Guiditta (Judy) never re-married yet raised her young family and continued farming until her death in Griffith on 30th August 1970. There are now fourth generation decendants in Australia.
Guerrino was a miner and adventurer and it is believed was destined for Agentina. For reasons unknown he disembarked in Melb. Perhaps he learnt of the mining activities in Rutherglen and Broken Hill while on board. Ill-health, probably from mining, led him to finally take up land in the M.I.A. Life would have been tough here- records show that there were only approx. 33 Italians residing around Griffith in 1921. He died from pneumonia following the farming accident in Grififth, M.I.A. in 1923.
